Cairo : Interior ministry of Egypt has confirmed the reports of detained Morsi supporters killing in jail, which says that they were killed while attempting to escape from jail.
The ministry said that the detainees had been killed by asphyxiation due to teargas and “crowding”, the statement was released late Sunday night.
Earlier on Sunday the Egyptian security forces had said that they had aborted an escape attempt by over 600 detained supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi at Abu Zaabal prison north of Cairo.
MENA, Egypt’s state news agency, reported that an armed group attacked the Abu Zaabal prison while a transferring some of the detained Muslim Brotherhood supporters, but security forces were able to protect the vehicle.
Egypt’s interior ministry had announced that it had arrested 1,004 Muslim Brotherhood “elements” on "day of rage" this Friday, when large demonstrations were held demanding Morsi’s return to power and condemning the violent dispersal of pro-Morsi sit-ins.
According to Official health ministry figures the death toll from recent violence has reached at least 800 since Wednesday’s dispersal, but unofficial death toll is feared to be in between 2 to 3 thousands people.
