Chanting “Hands up! Don’t shoot” and “I can’t breathe,” thousands of protesters gathered in cities across the United States on Friday night after a fired Minneapolis police officer was charged with third-degree murder in the death of George Floyd.
As unrest following Mr. Floyd’s death in custody gave way to a fourth night of demonstrations, crowds shut down Los Angeles freeways, clashed with the police in Dallas and defaced the CNN Center in Atlanta.
Even as the first night of an 8 p.m. curfew was taking effect in Minneapolis, protesters were defying it, gathering in the streets around the police station that was burned a night earlier.
Protesters filled smoky intersections and flames streamed from a bank, a post office, a restaurant and at least one car that had been set on fire, reported NYTimes.
Derek Chauvin, a white former police officer, was charged with murder days after using his knee to pin down George Floyd, a black man who later died.
