Lakhdar Brahimi along with UN Chief Ban Ki-moon announcing his resignation at UN headquarters (UN) |
New York: The special representative of UN-Arab League for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi resigns today, says UN.
The announcement came from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon during a daily press briefing at the UN headquarters in New York. He said that he accepted the resignation of Lakhdar Brahimi and described it a tragedy for Syrian people and UN.
Ban said that, "His (Brahimi's) efforts have not received effective support form the United Nations body that is charged with upholding peace and security, and form countries with influence on the Syria situation, is a failure of all of us."
Lakhdar Brahimi, who was present at the briefing said that he was "very, very sad to leave Syria in such a bad state."
Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since 2011 as some reports suggest that the Western powers along with regional allies: Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
Brahimi was appointed special envoy for UN-Arab League for Syria on August 17, 2012, succeeding former UN Chief Kofi Annan who also resigned from his post as the international envoy for the crisis in Syria on August 2, 2012, Press TV reported.
